Wisdom on Riding out the Waves of Anxiety
Taking a boat out across the bar at Urunga to go deep sea fishing can be a bit unsettling. The anxiety is up there. Here’s what I learnt about how to get out into the deeper water without overturning the boat.
I would sit back before the break and wait patiently for the right moment to cross.
I focus on the waves and wait for the break.
Then when the time is right, you ‘go for it’, fast but at a steady pace.
You have to get there before another wave comes.
I need to keep my calm to do what I need to do.
I have to keep pulling on all my reserves to keep calm.
I have to tell myself to keep cool.
The last thing I need is to freak out.
I also need to be sensible and smart.
If it’s not safe to cross the bar, it would be foolish to go.
To take on anxiety, I draw on Adrenaline and Courage.
Adrenaline helps me pick the right time to go and Courage allows me to do it.
When Anxiety is around, it’s important to not be too afraid to have a go.
If I stay calm and cool, I know I can make it. I can ride out the waves of Anxiety.
As long as it’s safe, I can just ‘go for it’.
